Absolute trailblazers, NFA are one of Australia's first Indigenous rock groups, with an incredible legacy - from incessant local touring, to playing with The Clash, Peter Tosh and Cold Chisel, to international tours and film & TV. That history is retold beautifully in Donald Robertson's new book, which comes recommended, but it's not just past glories - their music remains urgent and vital today. A rare, and daresay unmissable show.

This INCREDIBLE two-day festival (it continues the following day) is impeccably curated, featuring an amazingly strong roster of emerging local as well as interstate acts. As the name would suggest, this is the eighth iteration of the festival, it's incredibly exciting to see such a strong showing this year. UPDATE: this entry has now been broken up into the two days now that the festival running times have been announced. The Saturday event is being held at the Portugal Madeira Club.

"Hi! I'm Hollywood Steve. You've caught me relaxing in my music nook ..." If you're of a certain age, those the were the words that transported you into a world that you otherwise might not have had a compass to navigate: a sudden cultural phenomenon from the 70s retroactively dubbed "Yacht Rock". Suddenly, you contextualised and/or discovered a world of The Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Michael MacDonald (as separate from The Doobie Brothers), STEELY DAN, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross – and Warren Fucking G. Suddenly, you had access to an entire musical slice of Americana filtered through a lens of glossy studio production and probably a fuckload of cocaine, I guess. The excesses of the American dream laid rich in luxurious music for vibing to, for 70s people. And you know what? I reckon the guitar solo on "Peg" by Steely Dan might be one of my favourite things in the world ever. I also think "I Keep Forgetting" by Michael MacDonald is an incredible work of art, and not only because it created "Regulate". Hall & Oates fricken crush. And actually I think the riff for "Saiing" by Christopher Cross rules, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. And all the things that are completely obvious and non-controversial, but regardless I am saying them out loud. ANYWAY. If none of what I've said makes sense, please search YouTube for "Yacht Rock". Thank me later. This is a cover show. Sometimes we cover them.

Antenna is not to be confused with the Scientists/Hoodoos/Southend supergroup formed in the late 90s. It is, in fact, a new punk group fronted by Shogun (yes, another one!), he of Royal Headache/Shogun & The Sheets/Finnoguns Wake/many more fame.

A comeback show (second time they've played in the last 12 months) of a Sydney band from 1977. I don't know anything more than that... but if Aussie rock history is your thing, this might be a good look-in while you nurse your hangover into submission.

W/ Andy Golledge Band, Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys, Watty Thompson, Dead Witch, Bad Jeep Country, Jet City Sports Club, Swine
2:00pm Marrickville Bowling Club
This'll be a wild one. A collision of the Inner West's deeply overlapping country and punk universes, and a bunch of other stuff between. Golledge and his crew famously and frequently end up in the buff more often than they don't, Harnett is a talented tunewriter with a cracking band (check out Robbie on the kit, who also plays for Joe Liddy & The Skeleton Horse amongst tons of other groups), Swine features Nick Ryan from Golledge's band in a four-piece unit that will blast your face off. Jet City Sports Club play sweet jangle pop with hooks for days. This is a solid lineup is what I'm saying. A real nice time. And yet it's sold out. But don't let that stop you from keeping an eye out for these acts next time they're playing!

Ron is the lead singer and "principal co-composer" in Australian rock music legends from the 80s and 90s Died Pretty! Fabels are rad. MD Horne I've seen on a lot of Midnight Special and CCXO lineups, and those sorts of people have good taste. Might be worth a look.

Alright, Marrickville Bowling Club's bookings just ramped the fuck up! Normally there's about 8 gigs listed on their website at any given moment, now there's 16. Great space, seen some awesome shows here, always unassuming but reliable. The Bowlo continues its operations at the opposite end of the room almost as though it were oblivious to the incredible music that's come off that stage. In short: Bowlo shows are good. And not to get too political about it, but ... Bowlos are better without pokies.
