Front-end Product Developer

Contract

SydneyMusic is looking for a passionate Front-end Developer to help us evolve our website and supporting channels

At a glance

  • Job applications close: 10 Sept 2026, 5:00 pm
  • Hourly rate set according to market rate for skill and experience (pitch what you reckon you’re worth)
  • Set your own hours (scope and timeframes set as a team)
  • Work from anywhere (our office is in Chippendale)

About the gig

In this role, the successful applicant will be responsible to:

  • Help SydneyMusic to serve our growing audience better by helping them discover and attend gigs. Work alongside the rest of the SydneyMusic team to identify how we can improve our products to help increase participation in live music.
  • Help us to be more sustainable by getting more supporters and selling merch, via prompts / CTAs on our website and other channels. Currently our only revenue is derived from reader donations, some limited corporate donors and merch sales.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement to our overall operations. We see being part of a culture of continuous improvement as a team responsibility.
  • Help maintain our open source codebase. Help to ensure that our code is maintainable and well-structured, all dependencies are up-to-date within reason, build output is clean and without noise, and the build is efficient and performant.
  • Contribute to a design refresh — help to produce an evolved, cohesive, cross-platform visual identity for SydneyMusic and associated efforts. This may include refactoring or refining components or a style library.

This role is a contract role and will be carried according to a pre-approved working cadence or scope. Your time will need to be approved in advance by the Product & Operations Director.

SydneyMusic is an AI-free organisation. We have elected to do without relying on AI for coding, planning, productivity or research. You will need to be OK with coding by hand and doing things yourself. We think it’s worth it.

Who this role is for

Applicants are expected to have:

  • Strong professional experience building using web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript and frameworks and technologies built on top of these. Currently we use SvelteKit, Nunjucks, CommonJS and TailwindCSS.
  • Intermediate programming abilities to work with our data retrieval and presentation layer, coded using DatoCMS, GraphQL and JavaScript.
  • Intermediate professional experience with simple CI/CD concepts and tooling.
  • Wisdom and experience with how to avoid wasting time with bikeshedding and overdesigning solutions
  • Experience collaborating with product managers, designers and non-technical stakeholders
  • An empathetic and thoughtful way of responding to user needs through great design
  • Knowledge and experience with delivery methodologies like Agile and Lean — understanding how to be iterative and efficient
